Honoring Support Partners: The Heart & Soul of Inclusive Communities

Direct Support Professional (DSP) Week shines a spotlight on essential caregivers.

At Values Into Action, we prefer the term Support Partner. This word captures the collaborative relationships between those offering and those receiving support.

This blog is a reflection on the everyday work happening in homes and communities of people with disabilities. From daily guidance to heartfelt companionship, Support Partners play a vital role in the lives of those they assist.

Pride in Partnership and Community

Values Into Action recently celebrated three remarkable Support Partners. During a luncheon, we recognized their exceptional skills and commitment to their work.

Throughout the event, a profound sense of pride resonated among everyone present. This pride stemmed from the dedication and daily contributions of Support Partners. The event showcased leadership and teamwork, with supportive relationships clear. The respect shared by all highlighted the spirit of partnership that defines Support Partners.

As we celebrate DSP Week, it’s equally important to hear the voices of those at the heart of our community. The following stories illuminate the impact and ongoing challenges within the field.

Pam’s World

Pam, an artist and self-advocate receiving support through Values Into Action, co-produced this blog with our Residential Leadership team. The blog explores what independence means to Pam. True support is more than assistance. It’s about enabling choice, fostering creativity, and honoring every person’s vision for their life.

Our Support Partners embody this commitment. They offer steadfast encouragement and practical help so that self-advocates like Pam can experience genuine independence every single day.

Robert’s Story: Direct Support Professional Retention

Robert, a person receiving services through Values Into Action, shared his perspective on retaining dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSP). His experience highlights the importance of respectful and empathetic relationships in creating a supportive work environment.

“The reason I have been successful with retaining staff is I treat them the same way I expect to be treated. With dignity, respect, and kindness.” – Robert Zotynia

Why Stories Matter During DSP Week

Stories like Pam’s and Robert’s show the true importance of DSP Week. Pam’s experience highlights how DSPs enable independence and personal growth. Robert’s approach reveals the value of respect and empathy in his partnership with staff.

In summary, it is fitting to highlight the official recognition of Support Partners. In honor of DSP Week, Governor Shapiro has issued a proclamation affirming the essential role DSPs play in our communities.

As we recognize the positive influences of a Support Partner, we share a special message from Deputy Secretary Kristin Ahrens.

Message from Deputy Secretary Kristin Ahrens

During Direct Support Professionals (DSP) week, September 7-13, 2025, the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) would like to honor and celebrate the extraordinary compassion and hard work of DSPs who support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism in Pennsylvania. DSPs play a vital role in empowering the people they support to live Everyday Lives. The attached proclamation from Governor Shapiro acknowledges your commitment, and unwavering compassion as not only caregivers; but as mentors, advocates, and friends to the individuals you support. Thank you for your commitment and service not only this week, but every day of the year. Your work truly makes a difference. Please join ODP in thanking all DSPs for their commitment and service.
