“Everybody can be great, because anyone can serve.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service: January 20, 2025
The Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday is an official day of service and celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy.
As we approach this day, we acknowledge the legacy of one man, who led a movement that continues today. We ask you to please take a moment to reflect on your contributions no matter how small you think they may be. Know how much we appreciate your efforts and impact. It is important that we continue our individual and collective work to realize justice for all.
-Marian Frattarola-Saulino, Founder and Executive Director of Values Into Action
As we remember and honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., we reflect on our commitment to volunteerism and social justice. As an organization focused on the individual rights of all, our mission and vision connects with the legacy of those who championed civil rights in collaboration with strong communities. One of those people was John Lewis (1940-2020), who was a civil rights leader and Congressman who fought for nonviolent social change.
The following post shares Lewis’s unforgettable tale from his childhood that depicts “faithful action in the midst of a literal storm.”
But we knew another storm would come, and we would have to do it all over again. And we did. And we still do, all of us. You and I. Children holding hands, walking with the wind. That is America to me—not just the movement for civil rights but the endless struggle to respond with decency, dignity, and a sense of brotherhood to all the challenges that face us as a nation, as a whole.
We invite you to review the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service activities and community gatherings in your region and encourage you to participate if able.
