The Closure of Crozer Health Systems: A Community in Transition

Outline of Pennsylvania with the words "We are here to help"

April 2025 marked a significant and somber moment for Delaware County (Delco), Pennsylvania.  Crozer Health Systems, the region’s largest health network, announced its closure. This decision was made by Prospect Medical Holdings. It comes after months of financial struggles and unsuccessful attempts to find a buyer.

Impact on Employees and Patients

The closure will result in the layoff of approximately 2,651 employees. This leaves many healthcare professionals seeking new employment opportunities. For patients, the transition is equally challenging. Efforts are being made to ensure that critical care continues uninterrupted. However, the closure leaves residents in and around Delco with limited access to healthcare providers.

Community Response

The announcement has sparked a wave of concern and action within the community. Many came together, including elected officials and concerned organizations. They worked tirelessly to prevent this outcome, but ultimately, a viable alternative could not be reached.

Looking Ahead

As the Crozer health system winds down operations, the focus is on transitioning patients to other facilities.  Also, supporting employees as they round out their employment. The ambulatory surgery and imaging centers at Brinton Lake, Broomall, Haverford, and Media will remain open, providing some continuity of care.

The closure of Crozer Health Systems is a reminder of the fragility of healthcare networks. It’s also an important reminder of the impact such decisions have on communities. The resilience and support of Delco’s residents and businesses will be crucial in moving forward.
