Introduction
November is Assistive Technology Awareness Month. Assistive technology helps people with disabilities live more independently and be included in their communities. Governor Josh Shapiro says that assistive technology is not just nice to have—it’s something people need to live, learn, and work where they want.
Governor’s Quote
“Assistive technology opens doors to opportunity, enabling Pennsylvanians with disabilities to participate fully in education, employment, and community life.”
How This Connects to Values Into Action’s Mission
Values Into Action supports people in making their own choices about their lives and services. Assistive technology helps people have more control. Tools like remote support, communication devices, and smart home technology help people stay safe and promote independence.
Highlight: Robert Zotynia’s Article
Robert Zotynia, self-advocate and Project Coordinator for our True Friendship Project, wrote an article for the National Leadership Consortium Bulletin. He explains how technology can improve services for people with disabilities. He also says it’s important to use technology in ways that respect people’s dignity. Technology should help people connect, not replace human relationships.
In addition to Robert’s article, there are many articles and resources about technology. Robert’s article starts on page 10 of the bulletin.
Key Points from Robert Zotynia’s Article
- Assistive tools should help people be independent, not make things harder.
- Leaders should support new technology but keep people’s needs first.
- Technology should work with, not replace, the relationships that matter.
- Everyone should be able to get assistive technology, no matter where they live or how much money they have.
Why This Matters
Assistive technology is more than just devices. It gives people chances to live full, included lives. Tools like communication aids and remote monitoring help break down barriers and support independence. Governor Shapiro reminds us that these technologies help make our communities healthier and happier.
