Medicaid Matters: Why We Spoke Up at the Capitol

On June 2nd, I joined my coworkers Brian Petocz, Kristian Smith-Diaz, and Pamela Zotynia at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg for Vision for Equality Advocacy Day. We were there to support self-advocates and families who are speaking up for something that affects thousands of people: Medicaid funding for home and community-based services (HCBS).

We met with lawmakers and their staff to talk about why this funding is so important. We also joined a press conference where people shared their personal stories. We sat on the Capitol steps holding signs that said “Medicaid Matters!”—because it truly does.

Why Medicaid Funding Is So Important

Medicaid is the main way people with disabilities get the support they need to live in their own homes and be part of their communities. This includes help with things like:

  • Getting dressed, eating, and bathing
  • Finding and keeping a job
  • Learning new skills
  • Getting around town
  • Staying safe and healthy

Without Medicaid, many people would be forced into institutions or nursing homes, even if they don’t want to live there. We heard this fear expressed over and over again during our time at the Capitol.

The Problem We’re Facing

Right now, Pennsylvania has a long waiting list for waivers that allow people access to services. Some people wait years to get the help they need. On top of that, some waivers don’t pay enough to attract and keep good support staff. This means people may not get the quality care they deserve.

To make things worse, there’s a new bill—Senate Bill 657 (SB657)—that could make it easier for people to be placed in large group settings instead of living in their own homes and spending time in their neighborhood. This would undo years of progress made by advocates who fought for the right to live freely in their home and community.

What We Believe

At Values Into Action, we believe everyone should have the freedom to choose where and how they live. People with disabilities deserve the same chances as anyone else—to live, work, and be part of their communities. Medicaid makes that possible. But we can’t take it for granted. We need to protect it—and we need your help.

Take Action: Speak Up for Community Supports

You can help by telling your state lawmakers to:

  • Support funding for home and community-based services
  • Say NO to Senate Bill 657

Find your Pennsylvania legislators and send them a message here.

Let them know that everyone deserves to live a full life in their community.
